The collection contains the original manuscript "Voyages dans Le Haute-Missouri, en 1803, 1804 & 1805" and the 1939 published version "Tableau's Narrative of Loisel's Expedition to the Upper Missouri." The narrative summarizes the voyage up the Missouri, describes the flora and fauna, hunting, Indians tribes, their trading, customs, religion, ceremonies, warfare, and superstitions.

After elected president, Thomas Jefferson wanted a direct and practicable water communication across the continent and US sovereignty over the land occupied by the many different Indian tribes along the Missouri River. Pierre Antoine Tabeau (1755-1820), born in Lachine, Quebec, attended the Seminary (now Laval University), 1771-73, and in 1776 he went west. He was associated with the North West Company and in 1803 accompanied Régis Loisel on an expedition commissioned by Lt. Gov. de Lassus to investigate British intrusions in the Upper Missouri territory, its resources, and the Indians. He lived with the Arikara Indians in 1804 and there met Lewis and Clark.
